Pernicious Anemia

What is it?

A form of anemia caused by lack of intrinsic factor, a substance needed to absorb vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) from the gastro intestinal tract.

Vitamin B12 is found only in food of animal origin such as meat, fish and diary products. It often affects adults between ages of 50 and 60. The symptoms of pernicious anemia develop slowly and gradually and may not be immediately recognized.

Alternative Names

Juvenile Pernicious anemia; Deficiency-vitamin B12; Vitamin B12 deficiency (malabsorption); Addison's anemia; Anemia pernicious; Congenital pernicious anemia; Combined system disease.

Cause

People with pernicious anemia loose their ability to make intrinsic factor; a chemical secreted by the stomach's membrane lining that makes absorption of vitamin B12 possible. the reason for the absence of intrinsic factor is unknown, but it may be a genetic deficiency inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder, or auto immune disorder endocrine related such as type 1 diabetes, hypoparathyroidism, Addison's disease, hypopitutarism, testicular dysfunction, Graves disease, chronic thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis, secondary amenorhea, vitiligo, and candidiasis. Gradually the deficiency of vitamin B12 affects sensory and motor nerves, causing neurological effects. The anemia also affects the gastrointestinal system and the cardiovascular system.

Signs and Symptoms

Weakness and tiredness; Bleeding gums; Nausea, Appetite loss and Weight loss ; Sore tongue; Numbness and Tingling in the hands and feet; Difficulty maintaining balance; Yellowish tinge to eyes and skin; Shortness of breath; Poor memory; Headache; Depression; Confusion and Dementia. Neurological signs and symptoms will develop if the disease goes untreated.

Risk Factors

Improper diet especially a vegetarian diet lacking vitamin B12 and without supplements. Thyroid disease; previous stomach surgery, stomach cancer or gastrities bulimia or Anorexia nervosa; Diabetes mellitus; Myxedema (a Thyroid disorder). also, this disease can affect all racial groups, but the incidence is higher among people of Scandinavian or northern European descent. This type of anemia usually does not appear before age 30, although a juvenile form of the disease can occur in children, juvenile or congenital pernicious anemia is evident before the child is 3 years old.

Tests

Tests that may indicate pernicious anemia include:

  • CBC Results that show low hematocrit and hemoglobin with elevated MCV
  • CBC showing low white blood count and low platelets
  • Low reticulocyte count
  • Bone Marrow Examination
  • Serum LDH
  • Below normal serum vitamin B12 level
  • Schilling's test(check's vitamin B12 absorption)

Management through Dynamic Pharmacology(Homoeopathic Medicine), Founded by Samuel Hahnemann MD.

Dynamic pharmacology pertaining to Bio-chemical principles.

The immune system needs minerals, trace elements, vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats for proper response, synthesis and degradation, especially to fight a mineral disorders like pernicious anemia. Dr. Schuessler's biochemical theory maintains that, human body contains twelve vital elements -calcium, phosphorus, Magnesium, iron, sodium, potassium, Fluorine, sulfur, chrome and silicon; a deficiency of these minerals can disturb the functions of the human body.

Trace Elements:

Trace elements are the co-factors and activators of many enzymes and other regulatory molecules important for proper body function. They include selenium, copper, cobalt, iodine, iron, zinc, manganese, vanadium, chromium, boron, chlorine, silicon, fluorine, molybdenum, arsenic, germanium, lithium and nickel. There may be others. Magnesium is a semi-major element, but often included in this list because of its many regulatory roles.

Trace elements and vitamins work in concert. They are interdependent. Their function has been grossly neglected and valuable academic research is not well known because its little interest to the market. Another difficulty is that trace elements and vitamins are usually studied individually. This is like trying to play a symphony on one instrument. The balance between them is as important as is the quality.

Trace element deficiencies are now widespread in the population as a result of unsuitable diet, faulty agriculture, food processing, antibiotics and other modern drugs.

Faulty agriculture stems from:

  1. Failure to return trace elements to the soil after years of intensive removal through crops, meat and milk.
  2. Heavy use of fertilizers, particularly nitrogen, together with plant breeding for response to fertilizers. Changes occur then in the microflora of the plant root and thus in the biochemistry and resilience of the plant.
  3. Pollution accelerates depletion of elements such as selenium and magnesium and in some areas deposits heavy metals antagonistic to nutrients.

Properly balanced nutrition should come from the food. But there are caveats.

  1. The food itself may be lacking inadequate selenium, which is a strong possibility. The firms know this, for their soils are inherently selenium deficient, and they correct it by legislating that every bag of fertilizer must have selenium in it. This has been followed by a reduction in heart disease.
  2. Illness, medication, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and nutrient imbalance may induce in the body a loss by malabsorption or excretion or chelating that cannot be rectified by diet alone, rendering a course of mineral and vitamin supplementation.

Dynamic Management (Homoeopathic Medicine) in situations of deficiency.

Hahnemann was the first to recognize the importance of nutrition and the need to restore proper balance to rectify deficiency as a precursor or concomitant to Homoeopathic treatment. In his Paris practice, he invariably gave his patient a diet sheet along with homoeopathic prescription.

Minerals, trace elements and vitamins are needed for metabolism. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats need them for their synthesis, work and degradation. The immune system needs them to function.

Homoeopathic medicines function by gravitation potential which was discovered by new means of measuring the dynamic energy. This mode of action of potentiated Homoeopathic Medicines, something determines the intensity, and direction of the force of a drug acting within its sphere in the living organism. Theory of symptomatically similar medicines as a curative is therefore "a phase of theory of attraction of which, the theory of the potential is another phase". A dose of dynamic medicine placed on the tongue, in contact with the sentient nerve of the organism from which it is distributed through out the entire nervous system. This fundamental, enitative power and principle called life; this is called the dynamical theory of life. This can be only found through institutionally trained physicians, who are formally trained in Homoeopathic medical schools and hospitals. Seminars and lay training will never help an individual to suggest proper dynamic medicine for the neuro-immunoendocrine system. Hahnemann beautifully described this system and its reaction to disease in terms of vital force. It is suggested that there are several ways, in which dynamism is brought about; such as,

  1. By activation of certain pathways
  2. By correcting malfunction in absorption, transport or excretion.
  3. By redistributing salts, trace elements, etc., which in response to stress, disease or medication may be locked up in the wrong place, as a result of complicate proper bodily function. For example, infection and cortisone treatment induce the transport of zinc and iron to the liver and the release of copper from the liver to the blood stream. In edema, too much sodium enters the cell. In cramps, too much calcium is in the cell. The remedy must restore cell membrane integrity, and restore the ability to pump these ions out.
  4. By compensating for a deficiency induced inactive pathway. This may mean, redistributing a scarce element to the tissue at risk, or it may mean activating some alternative pathway. For example, vitamin E and Selenium have a number of overlapping roles. If vitamin E synthesis can be dynamically benefited through potential energy, selenium deficiency may be less critical.
  5. Through new dynamism Hahnemannian medicine able to provide consistent cure or improvement for these deficiencies, especially for pernicious anemia. Philosophy of Hahnemann MD. is based upon, and includes not only the physiological and pathological actions and reactions of man as a physical organism, but also, as a spiritual and psychical being, it includes and utilizes the mental, subjective and the functional phenomena as they are developed under the influence of hygeopoietic and pathogenic agencies. In this respect Homoeopathic medicine differs radically from, and is infinitely superior to all other systems or therapeutics., and this is solely because it recognizes life or Mind as an entity., as the primary - spiritual power or principle which creates and sustains the physical organism and is the primary cause of all its actions and reactions. Its working principle is the universal law of reciprocal action, otherwise known as the law of balance, compensation, rhythm, polarity, vibration or action and reaction; all of which signify a principle operative alike in the physical, mental and spiritual planes. Hence the consistent Homoeopathic physician who practice nutrition has no need to use any irritating, weakening, depressing, infecting, intoxicating or injurious agent of any kind in the treatment of the sick. Therefore, to homoeopathic physician all condition can dynamically applied as an agent for improving defense mechanism (Life Force). Homoeopathic medicine in a nutshell personifies a shell which some find hard to crack, but when cracked it can be found to be packed full of sweet and wholesome meat, with no worms in it.

Advancements:

In dynamic pharmacology (Homoeopathic Medicine), the treatment for Pernicious Anemia and connected disorders mentioned above are multifactorial. Different dynamic medicines prepared according to the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia have been beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of this disease. Several of micronutritional products such as Energy Compound, Avena Ferrous Etc., manufactured by Hahnemannian Research Center has been shown to be beneficial for the treatment of this disorder.
